Island style: fishing villages and carousels

Friday morning we hopped the bus over to Menemsha. I remembered it fondly from previous Vineyard trip for its great beach and great lobster rolls. And, it's a little less touristy as a real, working New England fishing village. Grace was beyond thrilled to throw rocks in the ocean (actually, she was throwing them at the buoy, which she talked about it for the rest of the trip) and climb on the big rocks.
The weather could not have been more perfect, and after returning as many rocks as possible to the sea, we headed to the docks for lobster rolls. I didn't get enough good pictures of sitting on the dock, surrounded by lobster boats and traps, but trust me that it was so picturesque it was almost too much.

We headed over to Oak Bluffs (and in a parenting coup, Grace slept the whole way in my arms on the bus). We had promised her a visit to the carousel (the oldest in America), but we discovered it didn't open until 4PM that afternoon for the season (actually, it seemed like just about everything had opened for the season that day, including potable water but that's another story). This was nearly catastrophic and even the ice cream bribe at Mad Martha's barely sustained her. We wandered around the adorable cottages (looking for "castles," which apparently includes gazebos) in the old camp meeting grounds and ate giant sundaes, arriving back at the carousel just as it opened.
Girl loves a "ring-around", as she calls merry-go-rounds, and if I could bottle the glee she expressed waiting for the carousel to start, I would be happy for the rest of my days.

Because we are over-indulgent yuppies, we let her have two rides. They had trouble getting it started the second time and I overheard one of the teenage helpers asking the manager if that had ever happened before. She looked at him and said "It's 134 years old." Ha, that yankee spirit.

Anyway, after the most exciting and joyful ring-around ride in the history of MV, we headed back to Edgartown.
When we back got to the house, Natalie, Chris, Baby Gavin and Sue (Gavin's grandma whom Grace called Super all weekend) had arrived. After a walk for groceries and a stop at cannonball park, Chris grilled and we ate fresh berries and watched two adorable, jet-lagged kids play until they bonked. Ahh, vacation!
