Baby's first Thanksgiving

We drove to Connecticut on Thursday morning, by way of Dunkin on the Pike, of course. It's a gluttonous holiday. Grace was a champ on the drive, chatting with her grandfather and snoozing when we started to sing country songs. After some catching up with my aunt, uncle and cousins, and lots of cuddles for Gracie, we all headed to New York for the Thanksgiving extravaganza at my aunt and uncles' friends' house. In addition to great food, a few other babies were there, including one from San Francisco who may become a playmate once we move. And Grace was absolutely delighted by all the action and attention. That kiddo loves to be around people! So much so that she forgot to nap all day and crashed big time when we got back to Connecticut, but not without a rather dramatic meltdown in the car.

We took a quick trip to New York City on Friday, then spent the rest of the weekend lounging by the fire, eating too much, and passing Grace around. She couldn't have been happier! And we couldn't figure out what we talked about before we had her to coo at all the time.
Oh the trip back. Better left unmentioned. A 2.5 hour drive became a 5 hour trip. World's most traumatic diaper change. Traffic. And joining a new club... parents with young children eating at a rest stop rather than plowing through the drive.

A few more Thanksgiving weekend pictures here.

Thankful

So much to be thankful for... here are the two cutest. And because they're so cute, especially together, I couldn't choose just one photo.*

But just because they're not pictured doesn't mean I'm not incredibly grateful for our wonderful parents, my rad brother and soon-to-be sister-in-law, and our dear friends and extended family. And jobs, food, and shelter.

Now, off to Connecticut and then on to New York for a feast and fun family time. Happy Thanksgiving!

Grandpa

My dad has been visiting for the last few days. He and Grace have been having a great time! And Steve and I have been enjoying pie. In fact, Dad is working on the Thanksgiving pies, now.

Some snaps:

She's got a future, for sure. College tuition, perhaps?

Friends

Not enough blogging lately, I know! Good reason? Not really... just been busy and a little lazy about transferring photos. Here are some pictures from recent playtime with friends.

Shopping and joint diaper change with new buddy Livia (new because Livia is just about 7 weeks old and oh my she is precious. I love to hold her - she's such a sweet, snuggly, tiny baby).
Then, last week we hosted a playgroup with some of our favorite friends. Because I'm an idiot, I didn't get a picture of all the kiddos together, but I wish I had - we had babies aged almost 2 months to 9 months. The apartment was a wreck by the end of the afternoon, but I learned a lot about childproofing for a mobile baby...
Grace and me.

Becky and Eli.

Katie, Thomas, Lily and Amy.

Livia was so peaceful until Grace started shrieking and scared her.

Grace and Lily.

Repeat.

All that playing tuckered Livia out.

Grace, too.

These moms are so awesome. They have been such great resources and become great friends as we've compared notes and laughed over the tough moments. Plus, they're always up for walks, picnics, or coffee, and they have such sweet kids, too. They'll also be helping us through the winter, aka the hideous months of being cooped up.

Bookshelf: To Kill A Mockingbird

Oh my gosh, I'm so in love with To Kill A Mockingbird. There isn't much I can say that hasn't already been said through its winning a Pulitzer and being named "best novel of the [twentieth] century". But oh it was so wonderful, I wish I hadn't finished it. What girl doesn't have some Scout in her? And I will so miss Jem and Atticus and Miss Maudie and Dill and even Boo Radley. It brought me to tears when Scout finally understood what it meant to stand in Boo Radley's shoes as he watched "his children" and then rescued them. The book is also so beautifully written. I found myself returning to passages just to appreciate the language. Oh, this might compete with Angle of Respose. I want to read it again right now. At the very least, we'll have to watch the movie, which I understand is excellent.

6 months old

Grace turned six months old on Sunday. It feels so trite to keep remarking how fast time is going, but it's true and I guess expressing shock at the passage of time just part of being a parent.

Our little Gracie Mae is growing and changing before our eyes. I've heard that everything starts to happen after six months and that things start clicking around six months, and I believe it. She is so happy 90% (80%?) of the time and when she's unhappy, she is sooo unhappy. The latest twist is separation anxiety. She can play by herself for a while and has done this since she was pretty young, but lately she'll get extremely upset if we put her down and will just sit on her play mat, bed, wherever with her arms over her head and sob hysterically. Almost as soon as we pick her up, she's fine again. But when she's happy, she's giddy - full of laughs and giggles. Sometimes, especially in the evenings, she'll get a little delirious and start giggling at almost everything, sometimes toppling over if she's sitting because she's laughing so hard. And oh she's ticklish, too.

She's started joining us at the table for dinner. She still refuses solids (ugh and another whole post in itself), but she's very happy sitting in her highchair, babbling away and gradually dropping all her toys on the floor.

Grace has also become affectionate. She has always been pretty cuddly, but now she'll wrap her little arms around your neck when you pick her up or hang onto your shoulders. We also think she might be trying to give kisses because sometimes she'll put her mouth to your cheek or chin and slobber. It's marvelous.

Mobility... she knows how to roll over, but isn't interested. We practice all the time and try to show her how it could lead to her being able to get to her toys. Sometimes she'll roll on her own, but mostly she'll just find something else to do if she can't reach what she wants or if she's on her tummy, she'll scream. She went through a brief phase of rolling around in her crib and getting stuck. Sometimes now we do find her curled on her side when she's sleeping. She's also gotten so wiggly! Always reaching and grabbing - I have to pay attention when holding her to prevent wild dives.

Anyway, I got it into my head that because she won't roll, she won't learn to crawl and she won't be self-sufficient in terms of getting to her toys, and she'll become over-demanding and spoiled. She has always liked to stand and has been pretty strong at it for quite a while. She also will happily pull to a standing position if you pull her arms. So, against my better judgment I tried showing her how to stand on her own. I just put her up to her toy chest and her crib rails, and she caught right on. Now, however, she has gotten the idea of pulling herself up since I encouraged her. If she's sitting on the floor she'll reach for our hands and then pull her feet closer to her bottom so she can stand right up with our help for balance but not actually guiding her up. She figured this out just over the weekend and it's fascinating to watch her work to figure it out and try to find a way to stand up when she can't reach our hands. On the other hand, I'm more than slightly terrified at what I've started. However, since she refuses to roll to anything that she could use to pull up and can't get into a sitting position on her own, I think we're safe for a while.

Grace is magic and joy and blessings and wonder. She makes us laugh and has changed everything in the most spectacular way. My favorite part of the day? Bringing her to bed for her morning feeding and cuddling up together. And picking her up after naps. And picking her up from daycare on work days, when she sees me across the room and then going over to scoop her up. And getting soaked as she chases her duck around the tub. And reading together before bed. And giving her a million kisses. And hearing her babble and squeal when she wakes up in the morning. And seeing her smile, hearing her giggle. And seeing how happy is when she gets to see her dad.

Two days

Steve had Saturday and Sunday off this weekend. Two days! In a row! First time since June, other than our vacation. And although we did nothing special, it was fabulous.

Grace loves it when we're both around and I love to be able to take a shower without jumping out every few minutes to reassure Gracie that I'm still around or show her a new toy. Plus, all her fun antics are even more fun when they can be shared with Steve! We have a wonderful life and I wouldn't change it, but sometimes the medical training thing seems so long and takes so much time from family life that I get sick of it. Minimum twelve hour days and just four days off a month can get to be a real drag. End rant and back to our fun weekend.

We went for some long walks, went to Gracie's buddy John's first birthday party, were interviewed about the unseasonably warm and fantastic weather by a local radio station while walking through the Common (we didn't see celebrities because apparently we now are celebrities), did some cooking, played on the swings and watched the Chargers win with a beautiful TD pass with 21 seconds to go. This led to learning that yelling "YESSSSS!" is funnier than The Daily Show.

With Stephanie and John at John's first birthday party (G's expression in this picture kills me).

Happy fam.

They're making the same face in this picture.

Bookshelf: Morality for Beautiful Girls

Another Alexander McCall Smith book in the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series, and another very enjoyable, fast read. I like these books because they're light, quick reads, but they also have some deeper messages that are quite thought provoking. Plus, they are so quick to read that I feel like I'm making progress through my book project and like I'm able to read more than one book every few months. If you are a reader with a young child or children, read these books! You will remember your former, reading self and it will feel good. Now I'm onto To Kill a Mockingbird. Can you believe I've never read it?
